The most unpleasant experiences in your life are probably fear. Fear is about something that’s yet to be. it’s about something that doesn’t exist right now. You don’t know what to write on the paper, will you pass or fail. You’re imagining all the horrible things that will happen post-examination.

Study Phobia “also known as Sophophobia” is the fear of learning. Its caused by many factors but the main factor responsible for study phobia is the fear of the unknown. Even though your fear may not be 100% logical, you attached studying to this fear.

The problem with this type of fear is that it affects your creativity, your memory, and your ability to learn. Knowing how to overcome the fear of studying is important to improve the efficiency of your learning.

Change your mindset to overcome study phobia

An important point that helps you solve this problem is to ask yourself: Do you study to learn something or do you study to prove something? Once you go to any place to prove something about yourself then success and failure will set in. But if your intention was to learn, then there is no such thing as failure or success.

If you want to overcome the fear of studying, don’t try to prove something. Try to learn new things. You went to school or college not to prove something but to learn new things, to enhance the horizons of your life. Whether you study Physics or Chemistry or Maths or Biology or Social sciences or Geography, you learn something that could enhance the scope and play of your life. Getting a few marks more or less will not make so much of a difference, what you learn will make the difference. If you shifted your mindset to think this way then fear will disappear.

Tips to relieve study phobia

Changing your mindset to think this way is a long trip and require you some effort, but here are some small tips that will help you along the way:

  • Start small: It’s common that students start very excited and spend 1 or 2 hours studying right from the beginning, which will lead their brains to feel overwhelmed and thus raise the alerts in the form of fear. It’s a big mistake to study from the beginning for a lot of time, rather than that you should start with a maximum of 10 to 15 minutes and increase it slightly every day, so your brain gets familiar with the process. Maybe you think 10 minutes a day is too short, but believe me it works. Every time I start a new project I just spend 10 minutes a day and increase slightly, and I finish with 6-8 hours of work with small breaks.
  • Start with the things you know better: A good tip that will help you reduce stress is to start with things that you understand better and then move slowly to the new things that you don’t understand. This technique will help your brain stay motivated along the journey of studying because you’ll always feel that you make some progress.
  • Buy some Plants: research has repeatedly shown that the presence of plants reduces stress levels. Plants change our perception of the environment to be more attractive to us so we feel more comfortable in it and therefore less stressed. Studies always showed that plants also helped to improve productivity and make it easy for workers in offices to recover from demanding projects.
  • Get enough sleep: If you are stressed then getting to bed early is easier said than done, but you do want to sleep 8-9 hours a night. Hopefully, you’ll wake up feeling well-rested and less anxious because sleep will help you process all the information you’ve been studying.
  • Deep breath: next time when you’re stressed to perform or when you’re panicking during an exam try this quick fix: First, slowly breathe in through your nose. To do it slow enough, count from 1 to 5, then breath out through your mouth again counting from 1 to 5. Repeat that for 1-5 minutes and your body will relax and your brain will switch from protection mode back to learning mode.
  • Chewing gum: No one really knows why but a study shows that chewing gum will help you improve your score because it increases focus and concentration which is great if you are feeling distracted and anxious.
  • Change the environment: While this might work for some people, it’s not for everyone. If you get a better feeling when surrounded by people then you should try to study in places like libraries where everybody is focused on studying. This will give you great motivation to focus on studying and will reduce stress and anxiety.

Fear of studying is an obstacle that can prevent you from progressing and improving yourself. Learning how to overcome this fear will require your time and effort, but it is worth the try.
